Increase in Rail Traffic

The Association of American Railroads reported an increase in rail traffic for the week ending March 16, 2013 in their rail traffic summary released this week.  U.S. carload volume was up 0.5 percent and intermodal volume was up 0.7 percent compared with the same week last year.  Total U.S. traffic for the week was up 0.6 percent compared to the same week in 2012. Diesel Price Down Four Cents

The week in petroleum analysis released March 20, 2013 by the EIA reported that the national average diesel fuel price decreased four cents to $4.05 per gallon, 10 cents lower than last year at this time.  Prices decreased in all regions of the nation.  The largest decrease was in the West Coast where the average price per gallon fell seven cents to $4.16.  The Gulf Coast price decreased five cents from last week to $3.99 per gallon.  Both the Rocky Mountain and East Coast prices fell four cents to $3.97 per gallon and $4.08 per gallon, respectively.  The Midwest price decreased three cents to $4.02 per gallon.

February Truck Tonnage Index

The American Trucking Association  reported on March 19, 2013 that the advanced seasonally (SA) adjusted For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index rose 0.6 percent in February, the fourth consecutive month that it has increased.  Tonnage gained a total of 7.7 percent over the last four months.  The SA index was up 4.2 percent compared to February 2012.  Year-to-date, the tonnage index is up 4.4 percent compared with the same period in 2012.
