New Intermodal Volume Record

In the November 7th release of the AAR Weekly Rail Traffic Summary the AAR reported that October’s weekly intermodal volume average was the highest average for any month in history.  Intermodal volume for October was up 3.8 percent compared with October 2012.  Carload volume in October was up 1.5 percent compared with October of last year, the highest year-over-year carload increase in the last 22 months.  However, according to the AAR, rail traffic in late October 2012 was impacted by Hurricane Sandy.

For the week ending November 2, 2013 carload volume was up 5.1 percent compared with the same week last year, and intermodal volume was up 17.7 percent.  The AAR reported that total U.S. rail volume for the week was also up, 10.8 percent compared to the same week last year, but again rail traffic in the comparable week in 2012 was affected by Hurricane Sandy.Rail Traffic Chart W44

Employee Spotlight: Jordan

JordanJordan Norris joined DALKO on November 17th of last year as a billing representative, and has been an integral part in keeping DALKO’s billing department running smoothly.  Before joining DALKO she worked in the food service department of Sharon Regional Health System, which is ironic considering Jordon detests cooking.

Jordon grew up in Brookville, OH, but now lives in Hubbard, OH with her husband Benjamin and their three year old daughter Mariah.  They also just recently added a fourth member to the family when they adopted a kitten named Oreo.  In her spare time Jordan enjoys watching football and basketball, in particular the Pittsburgh Steelers and Boston Celtics.

With Thanksgiving fast approaching and everyone starting to make plans for the holiday, please keep in mind that the Thanksgiving holiday is one of the busiest travel times of the year, and with all the excitement travelers tend to become more focused on the celebrations and less on getting to their destinations as safely as possible.  According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), during the 2011 Thanksgiving holiday 249 passenger vehicle occupants were killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes nationwide, 50 percent were not wearing seat belts.  This Thanksgiving, and every day, please make sure to buckle up so that you arrive safely to your destination and can celebrate with your loved ones.

Decrease in Diesel Fuel Prices

The EIA reported that the national average diesel fuel price price decreased one penny from last week to $3.86 per gallon in the Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Update released November 4, 2013.  The update also reported that there were price decreases in all regions of the nation with the largest on the West Coast where it decline two cents to $4.02 per gallon.  The average price per gallon of diesel fuel in the remaining regions, East Coast, Midwest, Gulf Coast and Rocky Mountain, all decreased by one cent from last week.  The Gulf Coast currently has the lowest average diesel fuel price at $3.77 per gallon.  The average price per gallon of diesel fuel in the Midwest is $3.83.  In the Rocky Mountain the price declined to $3.86 per gallon, and on the East Coast the average price per gallon of diesel fuel in now $3.88.
