Decrease In Rail Traffic

For week ending January 11, 2014 there was a decrease in U.S. rail traffic.  The AAR reported that carload volume was down 8.2 percent compared with the same week last year, and intermodal volume was down 6.7 percent in the Weekly Rail Traffic Summary released January 16, 2014.  Total U.S. rail traffic for the week was down 7.5 percent from last year.

Employee Spotlight: Carl Keck

Carl Keck joined the DALKO maintenance department August 26, 2013.  Before becoming part of the DALKO family he was self-employed, owner of Sharpsville Plumbing.

Carl grew up in Sharon, PA then served in the Marine Corps from 1994-1998.  He is married to his high school sweetheart, Mandee, who works for a non-profit company helping mentally handicapped adults.  Carl and Mandee have two children who attend Sharpsville High School, daughter Kailynne who is 17 years old and son Donny who is 15 years old.  Two other members the family are Rooney and Mia, the family’s two pugs.

Carl has a diverse list of hobbies including golfing, hunting, and riding motorcycles and four-wheelers.  However the most surprising is karaoke, which the DALKO team got to witness at the last DALKO Christmas party.  He is also a fan of who else but the Pittsburgh…well all of them the Steelers, Pirates and Penguins.

Diesel Prices Decline

The national average diesel fuel price declined two cents from last week to $3.89 per gallon, according to the Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Update released by the EIA January 13, 2014.  Dropping four cents, the average diesel fuel price on the West Coast is now  $3.99 per gallon.  The Midwest price declined three cents from last week to average $3.86 per gallon.  The average price per gallon of diesel fuel in both the Rocky Mountains and Gulf Coast decreased two cents to $3.88 per gallon and $3.78 per gallon respectively.  The East Coast had the smallest decrease, declining only a penny to make the new average diesel fuel price $3.94 per gallon.

New Intermodal Record

According to the Weekly Rail Traffic Summary released by the AAR U.S. rail traffic saw a record intermodal growth in 2013, up 4.6 percent over 2012.  In fact, intermodal volume in 2013 was the highest on record, exceeding the last record high set in 2006.  On the other hand, carload volume was down 0.5 percent from 2012.

For the month of December 2013 U.S. carload volume was down 0.9 percent from December 2012, while intermodal volume was up 8 percent.

U.S. carload volume for the first week of 2014, week ending January 4th, carload volume was up 2.1 percent compared with the same week last year, and intermodal volume was up 4.8 percent.  Total U.S. rail traffic for the week was up 3.2 percent compared to the same week in 2013.

Canadian carload volume for the week ending January 4, 2014 was down 7.4 percent compared with the same week last year, while intermodal volume was up 0.4 percent.

For the week Mexican carload volume was up 3.4 percent compared to the same week in 2013, while intermodal volume was down 12.7 percent.

The combined North American carload volume for the week ending January 4th was up 0.1 percent compared with the same week last year, and intermodal volume was up 3.5 percent.

Fuel Increase

The national average diesel fuel price is now $3.91 per gallon according to the Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Update released by the EIA, one cent higher than last week.  Increasing less than a penny the Midwest’s average diesel fuel price remains at $3.89 per gallon.  The  Gulf Coast region has the lowest average diesel fuel price at $3.80 per gallon, one cent higher than what it was last week.  Also increasing one cent, the East Coast’s average price is now $3.95 per gallon and the Rocky Mountain price is now $3.95.  At $4.03 per gallon the West Coast has the highest average price per gallon of diesel fuel, a one cent increase from last week.
