On November 1st, 2017, the state of California, will begin taxing regular gasoline 12 cents per gallon. Diesel fuel will be taxed 20 cents per gallon.
Gov. Jerry Brown says that the tax increase will generate approximately $5.2 billion a year. That money will be earmarked to support California’s aging transportation infrastructure. This is the first gas tax increase in 23 years for California. Republican lawmakers argued against the increase in a state that already pays the highest fuel prices in the nation. President Trump has indicated that one of his priorities is to increase infrastructure funding by as much as $1 trillion through public and private investment.

Hawaii signed legislation in 2012 to become the 50th and final state to enact the “Move Over” law. The law is designed to protect law enforcement officers and other first responders stopped on our Nation’s roads. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has determined that only 71% of the public are aware of this law.
Traffic related incidents are the number one cause of death among on-duty law enforcement officers. The NHTSA is actively working to increase awareness of the “Move Over” law. The campaign will be in print and on social media.

For the third consecutive week, the price of a gallon of diesel fuel has gone up in the United States. The average price posted on 04/10/17 was $2.582. Every region in the country has increased. The lowest price was in the Gulf Coast Region at $2.446. The highest was in the West Coast Region ( California ) at $2.935. The experts believe that this trend will continue throughout the summer.

John F. Kennedy was the youngest man (43) to be elected President of the United States. He was a Harvard grad, as well as a war hero. After holding seats in both the House and Senate, he was elected President in 1960. Tragically, his life was cut short by an assassins bullet in 1963.

President Trump met with leaders from the trucking industry to gain support for his health care proposal. The President told them that the premiums that they are paying, as is the fact with other associations, is “crippling them.” Chris Spear, President of the American Trucking Association was quoted saying “We have shown that the current Affordable Care Act is just plain unaffordable.” UPS Freight health care cost have grown to become 2 1/2 times more than the cost of fuel. Other companies have experienced more than a $300,000 increase from the previous year. The group all seemed to be in agreement that something has to be done. Chris Spear told reporters after the meeting “we cannot grow this economy if this industry cannot afford health care.”

When fans in the arena or at home watch the NCAA men’s and women’s Final Four, they will not be aware of the critical role of trucking in making the events happen.
The basketball courts are trucked to the destinations of the championships. The men will be playing in Phoenix and the women in Dallas. Doug Andrus Distributing hauled the floors from Idaho Falls, Idaho. Multiple trucks were used to haul the floors. Each floor has between 50-100 pallets weighing between 1800-2000 lbs. All the pallets are labeled and go into a specific spot. They are unloaded and put together like big jigsaw puzzle.
Once the tournament ends, the floors will be trucked back to Idaho, and the winning schools will be given the opportunity to purchase the floors at a discount.

The United States on-highway diesel fuel prices recorded on 04/03/17 averaged $2.556 per gallon. Every region of the country showed an increase from the previous week. The highest price in the nation was in California at $2.923 per gallon. The lowest was in the Gulf Coast region with a price of $2.414 per gallon.
