According to the report released Feb.28, 2013 by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), North American surface trade fell 3.2 percent in December 2012 compared to December 2011. Trade using surface transportation between the United States and its North American Free Trade Agreement partners, Canada and Mexico, totaled $71.9 billion in December.
BTS reported that in December 2012 $48 billion of the U.S. trade with Canada and Mexico moved by truck, $14 billion by rail, and $6 billion by pipeline. Surface transportation trade with Canada and Mexico accounted for 17 percent of total U.S. foreign trade in December.
U.S.-Canada surface trade was $42.1 billion in December 2012; $24.9 billion moved by truck, $8.6 billion moved by rail, and $5.4 billion moved by pipeline.
U.S.-Mexico surface trade was $29.8 billion in December; $23 billion moved by truck, $5 billion moved by rail, and $283 million moved by pipeline.
Michigan led all the states in surface trade with Canada in December with a total of $5.6 billion. The top commodity category transported between the U.S. and Canada was vehicles and parts in December, with $7.8 billion in trade.
Texas lead all the states in surface trade with Mexico , totaling $10.3 billion. Electrical machinery was the top commodity category transported between the U.S. and Mexico in December with $6.3 billion in trade.
