18,000 New Trailers Ordered

New trailer orders rose nearly 25% in May. This trend has been ongoing since December. The orders show dry vans as the majority of new business. Dry vans were up almost 50% compared to last year. ACT research company polled a significant number of fleets across the country. 61% responded that they are planning new equipment investments in the next three months. Replacement demand is on the rise in the dry van segment and level across the board. Higher freight demand in the second half of the year will create more demand in many other segments.

UPS to Add Holiday Shipping Charge

UPS has announced that it will institute a delivery surcharge this holiday season. The charge per package will range from 27 cents to 97 cents. To date, FedEx, has not made a decision to follow UPS’s lead. Executives at UPS say that the increase is needed to offset the e-commerce holiday shipping. The surcharge will go into effect 4 days before Thanksgiving, on November 19.

Make-A-Wish-Nebraska gets $230K from Truck Center


 

Truck Center Companies of Nebraska recently raised over $230,000  from their Make-A Wish annual golf outing. Since it’s inception, this event has raised over $2.5 million. Truck Centers operates 12 Freightliner dealerships in Nebraska, Oklahoma, Iowa, and Kansas. Truck Centers is the largest donor to the Nebraska Make-A-Wish Foundation. This year Jack Johnson was granted his wish to be part of the Nebraska  Cornhuskers football team. He spent 3 days with the team and had an experience of a lifetime!

UPS to Spend $260 Million

UPS is investing $260 million to build a package processing plant in Plainfield, Indiana. They expect to employ nearly 600 workers over the next 5 years. This site was chosen because of its Central location in the United States. It will service the Ohio Valley Region for the company. That include Indiana, Kentucky, and southern Ohio. The building will be 893,000 square feet and will open this fall for trailer  processing.

Old Dominion Teams Up With Major League Baseball

Old Dominion Freight Line has been named the official carrier of Major League Baseball.

28,000 trailers and 10,000 tractors will sport the MLB logo to announce the partnership.

The LTL carrier will run advertising and promotions on the MLB Network, as well as other media outlets’

They will also showcase their brand at this years MLB All-Star Game and World Series.

LARGE UTILITY ACTING TO CONSERVE DIESEL FUEL

Duke Energy Corporation, as part of a settlement with U.S.E.P.A., will install 24 truck electrification stations at Big Boy’s Truck Stop in Kenly, N.C.

The company will spend over $300,000 on the project. IdleAir is the company that will maintain the units. It will allow truck drivers to turn off their

diesel engines and still have standard electric power in the cab. It is estimated that this should reduce carbon dioxide emissions by almost 500 tons.

Every year, more than 2 billion gallons of diesel are wasted by overnight idling. The electrification program can be a game changer to consumption of fuel and to the environment.

Electric Semi-Truck!

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Inc., said his company is going to unveil an electric semi-truck in September. No details were offered about the semi, such as whether it will be equipped with Tesla’s partially self-driving Autopilot mode.

He went on to say that Tesla is also working on electric pick-up trucks as well as a minibus. They currently sell two electric vehicles, the Model S sedan and the Model X SUV. By the end of 2017, Tesla will also launch a lower cost car, the Model 3.

Largest Containership Crosses Panama Canal !

History was made recently when a 1200 ft. long Cosco containership arrived in the Virginia

International Gateway  Port . The ship is the largest container vessel to ever cross the Panama Canal.

The ship is more than 100 ft. longer than the U. S. Navy’s newest aircraft carrier, the

U.S.S. Gerald R. Ford. It can carry more than 13,000 containers or TEU’s. “These

large ships really represent opportunity and global trade,” Virginia Transportation Secretary Aubrey Layne added,

telling the crowd that the containers mean jobs and paychecks across the United States.

Werner Sponsors Nebraska Police Dog

Werner Enterprises presented  a check for $10,000 to the Nebraska State Patrol Foundation for the purchase of a police service dog. The dog will aid in detecting controlled substances, locating lost or missing persons, and apprehending suspects. Derek Leathers, CEO of Werner, said “It is an honor to partner with local law enforcement to secure a safer community.”

 

$28.7 Million Stolen!

In just the first quarter of 2017, criminals stole nearly $29 million worth of freight. The average loss value was just shy of $150,000. 58% of the thefts involved stealing a truck. The top three targeted areas were California, Ontario, and Texas. the number one commodity at one time was electronics. It is now food and beverage. The majority of the truck thefts involved drivers with fraudulent schemes such as identity theft or wire fraud. With the rise of these disturbing numbers also comes a rise in insurance premiums.
