Increase in Rail Traffic

According to the report released by the AAR June 6, U.S. rail traffic was up for both the month of May and the week ending June 1, 2013.  Total intermodal traffic fo the month of May was up 3 percent compared to May 2012, and carload volume was up 0.7 percent.

The AAR reported that for the week ending June 1 carload volume was up 1.6 percent and intermodal volume was up 3.7 percent compared with the same week last year.  Total U.S. rail traffic for the week was up 2.5 percent compared with last year.

For the first 22 weeks of 2012 carload volume was down 1.7 percent from the same point last year, while intermodal volume was up 4.1 percent.  Total U.S. rail traffic for the first 22 weeks of 2012 was up 0.9 percent from 2012.

Canadian carload volume for the week ending June 1 was up 8.1 percent compared to last year, and intermodal volume was up 21.1 percent.  For the first 13 weeks of 2012 Canadian carload volume was up 2.5 percent from the same point last year, and intermodal volume was up 5.4 percent.

Both Mexican carload and intermodal volume was up for the week, carload volume was up 13.6 percent and intermodal volume was up 5.3 percetn compared to last year.  For the first 22 weeks of 2013 Mexican carload volume was up 9.2 percent from last year, while intermodal volume was even with last year.

The totals for North American rail volume for the first 22 weeks of 2013 showed that carload volume was down 0.4 percent, while intermodal volume was up 4.2 percetn compared with the same point last year.
