Mixed Rail Traffic: April 27th

In their rail traffic summary released May 2, 2013 the AAR reported that intermodal traffic in April 2013 was up 1.6 percent compared with April 2012.  Carload volume for April was down 0.4 percent compared with April of last year.

For the week ending April 27, 2013 carload volume was down 2.6 percent, while intermodal volume was up 2.1 percent compared to the same week last year.  Total U.S. rail traffic for the week was down 0.4 percent compared to the same week in 2012.

Carload volume for the first 17 weeks of 2013 was down 2.4 percent from the same point last year, while intermodal volume was up 4.4 percent.  For the first 17 weeks of 2013 total US traffic was up 0.7 percent from last year.

Both Canadian carload and intermodal volume were up for the week ending April 27th, carload up 0.8 percent and intermodal volume up 1.5 percent from last year at the same time.  For the first 17 weeks of 2013 Canadian carload volume was up 2.4 percent, and intermodal volume was up 3.9 percent from the same week in 2012.

Mexican carload volume was up 2.4 percent for the week when compared to the same week last year, however intermodal volume was down 11.7 percent.  Mexican carload volume for the first 17 weeks of 2013 was up 8.8 percent from last year at the same time, and intermodal volume was up 0.9 percent.

For the first 17 weeks of 2013 North American carload volume was down 1 percent, while intermodal volume was up 4.2 percent compared with last year.
