Mixed Weekly Rail Traffic

According to the AAR, rail traffic was mixed for the week ending June 8, 2013, with carload volume down 2.8 perceent compared to the same week last year but intermodal volume was up 2.5 percent.  Total U.S. rail traffic for the week was down 0.3 percent compared to last year.

Carload volume for the first 23 weeks of 2013 was down 1.7 percent from the same point last year, while intermodal volume was up 4 percent.  For the first 23 week of 2013 total U.S. rail traffic was up 0.9 percent from last year.

Canadian carload volume for the week ending June 8 was down 4.9 percent, and intermodal volume was down 3.3 percent compared to the same week in 2012.  For the first 23 weeks of 2013 Canadian carload volume was up 2.2 percent from the same point last year, and intermodal volume was up 5 percent.

Mexican carload volume was up 12.1 percent for the week compared to last year, and intermodal volume was up 1.1 percent.  Mexican carload volume for the first 23 weeks of 2013 was up 9.3 percent from the same point in 2012, and intermodal volume was up 0.1 percent.

Combined North American carload volume for the first 23 weeks of 2013 was down 0.5 percent, however intermodal volume was up 4.1 percent from the same point last year.
