Mixed Weekly Rail Traffic

In the Weekly Rail Traffic Summary released March 14, 2013 the Association of American Railroads reported mixed rail traffic for the week ending March 9.  Carload volume was down 0.9 percent compared to the same week in 2012, while intermodal volume was up 4 percent.  Total U.S. traffic for the week was up 1.3 percent compared with the same week last year.

For the first ten weeks of 2013, total U.S. rail traffic was up 1.1 percent from the same point in 2012.  Carload volume was down 3.7 percent for the first ten weeks of 2013 from the same point last year, while intermodal volume was up 7.2 percent.

Both Canadian carload and intermodal volume was up for the week compared to the same week last year.  Carload volume was up 4.8 percent, and intermodal volume was up 7.2 percent for the week ending March 9th.  Canadian railroads reported that the cumulative carload volume for the first ten weeks of 2013 was up 2.5 percent, and intermodal by 6.4 percent from the same point last year.

Mexican railroads reported that carload volume for the week was up 13 percent compared to the same week in 2012, and intermodal was up 24.5 percent.  The cumulative carload volume for the first ten weeks of 2013 was up 9.6 percent from the same point last year, and intermodal was up 5.2 percent.

Combined North American carload volume for the first ten weeks of 2013 was down 2 percent, while intermodal volume was up 7 percent compared with the same point last year.
