New July Record

The AAR reported that total U.S. rail traffic was mixed in July 2013, but that the weekly average for intermodal traffic in July was the highest of any July in history.  Intermodal traffic for the month of July was up 2.5 percent compared with July 2012, while carload traffic was down 0.5 percent.

For the week ending August 3, 2013 the AAR reported that carload volume was down 0.4 percent compared with the same week last year, but intermodal volume was up 4.8 percent.  Total U.S. rail traffic for the week was up 2.0 percent compared with the same week in 2012.

Carload volume was down 1.3 percent from the same point last year for the first 13 weeks of 2013, while intermodal volume was up 3.5 percent.  For the first 31 weeks of 2013 total U.S. rail traffic was up 0.8 percent from the same point in 2012.

Both Canadian carload and intermodal volume were up for the week ending August 3, 2013 compared with the same week last year, carload volume was up 0.3 percent and intermodal volume was up 5.0 percent.  For the first 31 weeks of 2013 Canadian carload volume was up 1.2 percent from the same point in 2012, and intermodal volume was up 4.1 percent.

Mexican carload volume or the week was up 14.9 percent compared with the same week last year, while intermodal volume was down 4.5 percent.  For the first 31 weeks of 2013 Mexican carload volume was up 9.0 percent from the same point last year, while intermodal volume was down 0.7 percent.

For the first 31 weeks of 2013 North American carload volume was down 0.4 percent compared with the same point in 2012, but intermodal volume was up 3.4 percent.
