Rail Traffic Update: Aug. 17

In the Weekly Rail Traffic Summary released August 22, 2013 the AAR reported for the week ending August 17th carload volume was up 0.5 percent compared with the same week last year, and intermodal volume was up 3.7 percent.  Total U.S. rail traffic for the week was up 2 percent compared with the same week in 2012.

Carload volume for the first 33 weeks of 2013 was down 1.2 percent from the same point last year, while intermodal volume was up 3.5 percent.  For the first 33 weeks of 2013 total U.S. rail traffic was up 0.9 percent from last year.

Both Canadian carload and intermodal volume was up for the week ending august 17th, carload volume was up 1.7 percent and intermodal volume was up 4.9 percent.  For the first 33 weeks of 2013 Canadian carload volume was up 1.4 percent, and intermodal volume was up 4 percent from the same point in 2012.

Mexican carload volume for the week was up 11.8 percent compared with the same week last year, while intermodal volume was down 6 percent.  For the first 33 weeks of 2013 Mexican carload volume was up 9.2 percent from the same point last year, but intermodal volume was down 1.1 percent.

Total North American carload volume for the first 33 weeks of 2013 was down 0.3 percent, while intermodal volume was up 3.5 percent.
