Rail Traffic Was Up In August

Intermodal traffic in August 2013 was up 4.4 percent compared to August 2012 according to the report released by the AAR September 5, 2013, and carload volume was up 0.5 percent.

For the week ending August 31, 2013 U.S. carload volume was up 3.1 percent compared to the same week in 2012, and intermodal volume was up 4.2 percent.  Total rail traffic was up 3.6 percent for the week compared to the same week last year.

U.S. Carload volume for the first 35 weeks of 2013 was down 1.1 percent from the same point in 2012, while intermodal volume was up 3.6 percent.  For the first 35 weeks of 2013 total U.S. rail traffic was up 1.0 percent from the same point last year.

Canadian carload volume for the week ending August 31st was up 2.2 percent compared to the same week in 2012, and intermodal volume was up 3.2 percent.  For the first 35 weeks of 2013 both Canadian carload and intermodal volume was up from the same point last year, carload volume was up 1.3 percent and intermodal volume was up 4.1 percent.

Mexican carload volume for the week was up 13.6 percent, and intermodal volume was up 0.4 percent compared to the same week in 2012.  For the first 35 weeks of 2013 Canadian carload volume was up 8.4 percent, and intermodal volume was up 1.5 percent from last year.

North American carload volume for the first 35 weeks of 20313 was down 0.2 percent compared to the same point in 2012, while intermodal volume was up 3.6 percent.
