Carload & Intermodal: 2012

According to the Associations of American Railroads 2012 carload volume was down 3.1 percent compared to 2011 and down less than 1 percent from 2010.  The only other year U.S. rail carloads were lower than 2012 was in 2009 when it was impacted by the effects of the recession.

The AAR reported that intermodal volume was up 3.2 percent compared to 2011 and up 8 percent compared to 2010.  The 2012 intermodal volume is the second highest on record, down only by 0.1 percent from the record high set in 2006.  According to the AAR, a new annual record would have almost certainly been set in 2012 if it were not for the strike at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, and/or Hurricane Sandy.

Carload & Intermodal Vol. Down

According to the Association of American Railroads report posted January 3, 2013 both U.S. fright carload traffic and U.S. intermodal volume declined for the week of December 29, 2012.

U.S. freight carload traffic dropped 13.8% compared to the same week in 2011.  U.S. intermodal traffic also decline 14%.  For the 52 weeks in 2012, AAR reported that U.S. freight carload traffic dropped 3.1% compared to 2011. EIA Diesel Fuel: December 12

According to the EIA report released December 12, 2012 the national average diesel fuel price dropped four cents to $3.99 per gallon, ten cents higher than last year at this time. 

All regions of the nation have shown a price decrease with the largest being on the West Coast where prices declined six cents to $4.04 per gallon. The Rocky Mountain region’s prices dropped five cents for an average of $3.94 per gallon.  Both the East Coast and Gulf Coast showed a three cent price drop making the East Coast average $4.07 per gallon, and the Gulf Coast $3.87 per gallon.
