Truck Tonnage Index Increases

According to the report release April 24, 2013 the American Trucking Association’s advanced seasonally adjusted (SA) For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index was up 0.9 percent in March.  Compared with March 2012 the SA index was up 3.8 percent.  The tonnage index was up 3.9 percent in first quarter 2013 compared with first quarter 2012. Cass Freight Index: March

According to the Cass Freight Index Report shipment volume rose 5.8 percent from February to March, 4.2 percent higher than March 2012.  Freight shipments were up 6.4 percent since the end of last year compared to the same period last year.  Freight expenditures increased 6.5 percent in March, 4.4 percent higher than the same point in 2012.  Cass reported that a majority of the increase can be attributed to an increase in the number of shipments.

February Truck Tonnage Index

The American Trucking Association  reported on March 19, 2013 that the advanced seasonally (SA) adjusted For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index rose 0.6 percent in February, the fourth consecutive month that it has increased.  Tonnage gained a total of 7.7 percent over the last four months.  The SA index was up 4.2 percent compared to February 2012.  Year-to-date, the tonnage index is up 4.4 percent compared with the same period in 2012.

Freight TSI Rose 1.2%

For the third consecutive month the Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI) has increased according to the report released March 13, 2013 by the U.S. Department of Transportation Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).  The amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry rose 1.2 percent in January from December.  The BTS reported that the January 2013 index level was 18 percent above the April 2009 low during the recession, however it was 2.4 percent below the all-time high level set in December 2011.
