Increase in Rail Traffic

For the week ending July 6, 2013 the AAR reported that both U.S. carload and intermodal volume increased, carload volume was up 2 percent and intermodal volume was up 1.1 percent compared to the same week last year.  Total rail traffic for the week was up 1.6 percent compared with the same week in 2012.

The Association of American Railroads reported mixed traffic for the week ending April 20, 2013, with carload volume down 2 percent but intermodal volume up 0.6 percent compared with the same week last year.  Total U.S. rail traffic for the week was down 0.8 percent compared with the same week in 2012.

Rail Traffic Down for the Week

According to the AAR, intermodal traffic was up 0.5 percent in March 2013 compared with March 2012.  This is the smallest year-over-year monthly gain for intermodal since August 2011.  Carload traffic, on the other hand, was down 0.5 percent in March compared to the same month last year.  The decline in March is the lowest year-over-year monthly dip in carloads since January 2012.

For the week ending March 30, 2013 both U.S. carload and intermodal traffic were down.  Carload traffic was down 1.9 percent compared to last year, and intermodal was down 3.8 percent.  Total U.S. rail traffic was down 2.8 percent for the week compared to the same week in 2012. Read More

Fifth Week Diesel Prices Drop

The national average diesel fuel price decreased a penny to $3.99 per gallon according to the EIA analysis released April 3, 2013, 15 cents lower than last year at this time.  Over the last five weeks the average price has fallen 17 cents. 

All regions of the nation had a price drop except the West Coast where the price increased two cents to $4.12 per gallon.  The East Coast had the largest decrease where the average price fell three cents to $4.03 per gallon.  The Gulf Coast price decreased two cents to $3.92 per gallon.  Both the Midwest and Rocky Mountain prices decreased by one cent.  The Midwest’s average price is $3.97 per gallon , and the Rocky Mountain’s average price per gallon is $3.92.
