North American Surface Trade: Feb. 28

According to the report released Feb.28, 2013 by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), North American surface trade fell 3.2 percent in December 2012 compared to December 2011.  Trade using surface transportation between the United States and its North American Free Trade Agreement partners, Canada and Mexico, totaled $71.9 billion in December. According to the Association of American Railroads report released Feb. 21, 2013 carload volume was down 1.2 percent for the week ending Feb. 16, 2013 compared to the same point last year.  However, intermodal volume was up 13.6 percent compared to the same week in 2012.  Total U.S. traffic was up 5.3 percent for the week compared to last year. Rail Traffic: Feb. 9, 2013

The weekly rail traffic summary released by the Association of American Railroads on Feb. 14, 2013 reported that total U.S. rail traffic for the week ending Feb. 9 was up 2.2 percent compared to the same week in 2012.  Carload traffic fell 2.3 percent, while intermodal was up 7.7 percent when compared to the same week last year.

According to the AAR, cumulative volume for the first six weeks of 2013 showed that carloads were down 5.7 percent, however intermodal was up 5.7 percent from the same point last year.  Total U.S. traffic for the first six weeks of 2013 was down 0.7 percent from last year. Read More
