North American Freight Numbers for February

According to the report released May 1st by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, trucks transported 59.1 percent of the freight moved in February 2013 between the U.S. and its NAFTA partners, Canada and Mexico, followed by rail at 15.3 percent, vessels at 9.7 percent, pipelines at 7.7 percent and air at 3.6 percent.  Surface transportation modes, truck, rail and pipeline, carries 82.1 percent of the total NAFTA freight flows. Class I Railroad Employment Up

Class I railroad employment was up 0.66 percent in March compared with last year according to the Surface Transportation Board.  Top categories were Maintenance-of-Way and Structures, up 1.31 percent, Transportation (train and engine), up 0.68 percent, and Professional and administrative, up 0.16 percent.  Categories that declined were Transportation (other than train and engine), down 0.66 percent, Executives, officials, and staff assistants, down 0.60 percent, and Maintenance of equipment and stores down 0.02 percent.

According to the figures released by the Surface Transportation Board, Class I railroad employment went up 0.90 percent in February 2013 compared to Februrary 2012.  All categories showed a year-over-year gain except Transportation (train and engine) which was down 0.38 percent from 2012.  The remaining categories were as follows: Executives, Officials, and Staff Officials up 3.46 percent, Professional and administrative up 2.40 percent, Maintenance-of-Way and Structures up 1.48 percent, Maintenance of Ewuipment and Stores up 1.46 percent, and Transportation (other than train and engine) up 1.25 percent. Freight TSI Rose 1.2%

For the third consecutive month the Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI) has increased according to the report released March 13, 2013 by the U.S. Department of Transportation Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).  The amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry rose 1.2 percent in January from December.  The BTS reported that the January 2013 index level was 18 percent above the April 2009 low during the recession, however it was 2.4 percent below the all-time high level set in December 2011.
