Increase in Rail Traffic

The Association of American Railroads reported an increase in rail traffic for the week ending March 16, 2013 in their rail traffic summary released this week.  U.S. carload volume was up 0.5 percent and intermodal volume was up 0.7 percent compared with the same week last year.  Total U.S. traffic for the week was up 0.6 percent compared to the same week in 2012.

Total U.S. rail traffic for the first eleven weeks of 2013 was up 1.1 percent from the same point in 2012.  Carload volume for the first eleven weeks of 2013 was down 3.3 percent, while intermodal volume was up 6.6 percent from last year.

Both Canadian carload and intermodal volume were up for the week ending March 16, carload was up 2 percent and intermodal was up 8.1 percent.  For the first eleven weeks of 2013 Canadian carload volume was up 2.4 percent and intermodal volume was up 6.6 percent compared to the same point last year.

Mexican carload volume was up 8.7 percent for the week, however intermodal volume was down 10 percent.  Total Mexican carload volume for the first eleven weeks of 2013 was up 9.5 percent from last year, and intermodal volume was up 3.8 percent.

The combined North American carload volume for the first eleven weeks of 2013 was down 1.7 percent compared with the same point in 2013, while intermodal volume was up 6.5 percent.
