Intermodal Volume on the Rise for the 15th Week

U.S. carload volume was up 0.1 percent for the week ending October 12, 2013 compared to the same week last year according to the Weekly Rail Traffic Summary released by the AAR.  Intermodal volume was up for the 15th straight week in a row, up 4.0 percent compared to the same week in 2012.  Total U.S. rail traffic was up 1.9 percent for the week compared to the same week last year.

U.S. carload volume for the first 41 weeks of 2013 was down 0.9 percent from the same point last year, while intermodal volume was up 3.7 percent.  For the first 41 weeks of 2013 total U.S. rail traffic was up 1.2 percent from the same point in 2012.

For week ending October 12th, Canadian carload volume was up 11.0 percent compared to the same week last year, and intermodal volume was up 9.8 percent.  For the first 41 weeks of 2013 Canadian carload volume was up 2.1 percent, and intermodal volume was up 4.2 percent from the same point in 2012.

Both Mexican carload and intermodal volume were down for the week compared to the same week last year, down 7.2 percent and 4.0 percent, respectively.  For the first 41 weeks of 2013 Mexican carload volume was up 6.9 percent from the same point in 2012, and intermodal volume was up 0.9 percent.

Carload volume for all of North America for the first 41 weeks of 2013 was unchanged when compared with the same point last year, while intermodal volume was up 3.7 percent.
