Rail Traffic: Feb. 9, 2013

The weekly rail traffic summary released by the Association of American Railroads on Feb. 14, 2013 reported that total U.S. rail traffic for the week ending Feb. 9 was up 2.2 percent compared to the same week in 2012.  Carload traffic fell 2.3 percent, while intermodal was up 7.7 percent when compared to the same week last year.

According to the AAR, cumulative volume for the first six weeks of 2013 showed that carloads were down 5.7 percent, however intermodal was up 5.7 percent from the same point last year.  Total U.S. traffic for the first six weeks of 2013 was down 0.7 percent from last year.

Canadian railroads reported that for the week ending Feb 9, 2013 carload volume was up 3 percent, while intermodal volume was down 4.1 percent compared to the same week in 2012. Totals for the first six weeks of 2013 showed that carload volume was up 2 percent and intermodal volume up 4.4 percent compared to the same time period in 2012.

Mexican carload volume was up 7.9 percent for the week ending Feb.9, 2013 compared to the same week last year.  Intermodal volume was up 4.7 percent.  Cumulative volume for Mexican railroads for the first six weeks of 2013 showed that carloads were up 7 percent, while intermodal was down 2.2 percent from last year.
