Rail Traffic: March 2

The Association of American Railroads’ rail traffic summary released March 7, 2013 reported that both U.S. carload and intermodal volume were up for the week ending March 2, 2013 compared with the same week last year.  Carload volume was up 0.2 percent, and intermodal volume was up 9.7 percent.  Total U.S. rail traffic was up 4.4 percent for the week compared to the same week in 2012.

For the first nine weeks of 2013, total U.S. rail traffic was up 2.2 percent from last year according to AAR’s most recent report.  Intermodal volume for the first nine weeks was up 7.6 percent compared to the same  period in 2012, however carload volume was down 4 percent.

Canadian railroads reported that both carload and intermodal volume were up for the week ending March 2 compared to the same week in 2012.  Carload volume was up 5.3 percent, and intermodal volume was up 13.1 percent.  For the first nine weeks on 2013 Canadian carload volume was up 2.2 percent, and intermodal volume up 6.3 percent from last year.

For the week ending March 2, Mexican railroads reported carload volume was up 15.6 percent compared to the same week last year, and intermodal volume was up 33.2 percent.  Mexican carload volume for the first nine weeks of 2013 was up 9.2 percent, and intermodal volume up 3.4 percent compared to the same time period in 2012.

Combined North American carload volume for the first nine weeks of 2013 was down 2.3 percent, while intermodal volume was up 7.2 percent compared with last year.
