Freight Shipment & Expenditures Down

Freight shipments in January were down 3.6 percent from December 2013, and down 2.0 percent from January of last year according to the Cass Freight Index Report.  Although January is typically the slowest month of the year, the winter weather conditions this January further contributed to the depressed figures.

Freight expenditures in January fell 5.1 percent from December, which can be attributed in large part to the 3.6 percent decline in the number of shipments in January.  However, freight expenditures were up 1.4 percent from January of last year.

Cass Freight Index: April

April Cass Freight Index - ShipmentsAccording to the April edition of the Cass Freight Index from Cass Information Systems, Inc., both North American shipment volume and overall freight expenditures slumped in April after a strong March.  Freight shipment volume dropped 3.5 percent from March to April.  The year-over-year, shipment volume was down 1.3 percent, and 1.2 percent below 2011 figures.

April freight expenditures were down 1.6 percent from March, and April Cass Freight Index - Expendituresbelow last year’s level for the same period by 0.5 percent.  Year-to-date dollars spent is 0.8 percent higher than end of year 2012, but only because of March’s strong increase.  “Despite the ever-tightening truck capacity worsening truck driver shortage, truckload and LTL rates overall have remained as flat as the economy,” stated Rosalyn Wilson, senior business analyst of Delcan Corp.

Cass Freight Index: March

According to the Cass Freight Index Report shipment volume rose 5.8 percent from February to March, 4.2 percent higher than March 2012.  Freight shipments were up 6.4 percent since the end of last year compared to the same period last year.  Freight expenditures increased 6.5 percent in March, 4.4 percent higher than the same point in 2012.  Cass reported that a majority of the increase can be attributed to an increase in the number of shipments.
