The new PortMiami Tunnel opened Monday May 19th after a dedication ceremony. Construction of the tunnel has taken four years. The tunnel was constructed to reduce the heavy traffic in the Central Business District of Miami caused by trucks, cruise line buses and private cars. Port Miami is one of the largest container ports in Florida and of the 16,000 vehicles that travel to and from it, 28 percent of it is truck traffic. Currently the existing routes to and from the port restrict its ability to grow and drives up costs for port users. With the opening of the tunnel that will provide a direct connection to and from the port to highways via Watson Island to I-395 the hope is the port will now be able to expand.
