U.S.-NAFTA Freight Flows

According to the Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics, the severe weather in January contributed to a decline in U.S.-Canada trade.  January’s freight movement between the U.S. and Canada was down 3.4 percent from January 2013, the largest year-to-year decline since November 2009.  Freight moved by truck was down 4.9 percent, and rail fell 9.9 percent.  Trade by vessel, on the other hand, increased 3.7 percent, and trade by pipeline increased 1.9 percent compared to January of last year.US-Canada Freight Flow Mode 01.14

The BTS numbers showed that trucks carried 52.2 percent of the total U.S.-Canada freight flows in January followed by rail at 15.1 percent, pipeline at 14.6 percent, vessel at 7.2 percent and air at 4.7 percent. Diesel Fuel Prices on the Rise

The EIA reported in the weekly Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Update that the national average diesel fuel price rose three cents from last week to $4.02 per gallon.  The average diesel fuel price in the Rocky Mountain region jumped five cents to $3.95 per gallon.  Increasing four cents, the average diesel fuel price on the West Coast is now $4.04 per gallon.  The Midwest’s average price per gallon of diesel fuel is no $4.02, three cents higher than last week.  Both the East Coast and Gulf Coast had a two cent increase to $4.15 per gallon and $3.80 per gallon, respectively.

Freight Shipment & Expenditures Down

Freight shipments in January were down 3.6 percent from December 2013, and down 2.0 percent from January of last year according to the Cass Freight Index Report.  Although January is typically the slowest month of the year, the winter weather conditions this January further contributed to the depressed figures.

Freight expenditures in January fell 5.1 percent from December, which can be attributed in large part to the 3.6 percent decline in the number of shipments in January.  However, freight expenditures were up 1.4 percent from January of last year.

Increase In Rail Traffic

The AAR reported in its Weekly Rail Traffic Summary that U.S. carload volume for the week ending January 25, 2014 was up 5.6 percent compared with the same week last year, and intermodal volume was up 3 percent.  Total U.S. rail traffic for the week was up 4.4 percent compared with the same week in 2013.

U.S. carload volume for the first four weeks of 2014 was up 0.9 percent from the same point last year, and intermodal volume was up 1.8 percent.  For the first four weeks of the year total U.S. rail traffic was up 1.3 percent from the same point last year. Read More
