Albert Schweitzer…1875-1965

 

Albert Schweitzer was a brilliant philosopher, musician, theologian and physician. He was born in 1875 in Alsace, Germany. In his early 20’s, Schweitzer devoted his life to science, music and preaching. In his early 30’s, he had gained an international reputation in all of these areas. His next inspiration was to become a medical missionary. After six years of study, he built his own hospital in Africa. Later, he set up a leper colony. The world finally rewarded his efforts in 1952 , when he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

In 1860 Abraham Lincoln was elected the 16th President of the United States. He led the country during the bloodiest years of its existence. Lincoln issued his Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 to set the slaves free. As Commander in Chief, he coordinated every aspect of the Civil War. His military strategy helped in the Union victory. Re-elected in 1864, he was tragically assassinated before he could finish his dream for his country.

Winston Churchill led Great Britain to victory in World War 11 as wartime prime minister. He joined

Franklin D. Roosevelt and Joseph Stalin in 1940 to shape the Allied strategy during the war.

 For his efforts and loyalty to his country, he was awarded the Nobel Prize and

knighted in 1953. Sir Winston Churchill passed away 12 years later in 1965.

Agnes Gonxha Bojarhiu (Mother Teresa) dedicated her life to helping the poor. She spent the majority

of her life helping the destitute masses of India. She moved into the slums of Calcutta

where she founded the Order of Missionaries of Charity. In 1971, she was awarded the Pope John XXIII

Peace Prize. By the late 70’s her Mission had more than 1000 nuns who operated 60 centers in Calcutta.

 It is estimated that her efforts saved the lives of over 8000 people in Calcutta alone.
