U.S. Rail Traffic Up

In the weekly rail traffic summary released March 28, 2013 the Association of American Railroads reported an increase in rail traffic for the week ending March 23rd.  Carload volume was up 0.2 percent for the week, and intermodal volume was up 1.4 percent.  Total U.S. rail traffic for the week was up 0.7 percent compared with the same week in 2012.

For the first 12 weeks of 2013 total U.S. traffic was up 1 percent from the same point last year.  Carload volume was down 3 percent, while intermodal volume was up 6.2 percent from last year for the first 12 weeks of 2013.

Canadian carload volume was up 1.9 percent for the week ending March 23rd, however intermodal volume was down 2.2 percent compared with the same week last year.  According to the AAR Canadian railroads reported the cumulative carload volume for the first 12 weeks of 2013 was up 2.4 percent and intermodal volume was up 5.8 percent from last year.

Mexican carload volume for the week was up 12.7 percent, while intermodal volume dropped 15.5 percent compared to the previous week.  For the first 12 weeks of 2013 total Mexican carload volume was up 9.8 percent and intermodal volume was down 2.2 percent from 2012.

Combined North American carload volume for the first 12 weeks of 2013 was down 1.5 percent, whereas intermodal volume was up 6 percent compared with the same point last year.
