Weekly Rail Traffic Mixed

For week ending April 13, 2013 the AAR reported carload volume was down 0.6 percent compared with the same week last year, while intermodal volume was up 3.3 percent.  Total U.S. rail traffic for the week was up 1.2 percent compared with the same week in 2012.

U.S. carload volume was down 2.4 percent for the first 15 weeks of 2013 compared with the same time period last year, however intermodal volume was up 4.9 percent.  For the first 15 weeks of 2013, total U.S. rail volume was up 0.8 percent from last year.

Canadian carload volume for the week ending April 13th was up 1.2 percent, and intermodal was up 1.9 percent compared with the same week in 2012.  Canadian carload volume for the first 15 weeks of 2013 was up 2.6 percent from the same point last year, and intermodal was up 4.2 percent.

Both Mexican carload and intermodal volume were up for the week.  Carload volume was up 15 percent compared to last year, and intermodal volume was up 1.8 percent.  For the first 15 weeks of 2013 Mexican carload volume was up 2.6 percent, and intermodal was up 2.3 percent from last year.

For the first 15 weeks of 2013, combined North American carload volume was down 0.9 percent compared with the same point in 2012, while intermodal volume was up 4.7 percent.
