Rail Traffic Increases

According to the AAR’s Weekly Rail Traffic Report both U.S. carload and intermodal volume were up from last year for the week ending April 5, 2014.  Carload volume was up 5.4 percent compared with the same week in 2013, and intermodal volume was up 12.6 percent.  Total U.S. rail traffic was up 8.7 percent compared with the same week last year.

U.S. carload volume for the first 14 weeks of 2014 was up 1.2 percent compared with the same point in 2013, and intermodal volume was up 4.4 percent.  For the first 14 weeks of 2014 total U.S. rail traffic was up 2.7 percent from the same point last year.

Canadian carload volume for the week ending April 5th was down 6.5 percent compared with the same week last year, while intermodal volume was up 12.4 percent.  For the first 14 weeks of 2014 Canadian carload volume was down 6.9 percent from the same point in 2013, however intermodal volume was up 2.3 percent.

Both Mexican carload volume and intermodal volume were up from last year for the week, 1.3 percent and 12.4 percent respectively.  For the first 14 weeks of 2014 Mexican carload volume was up 2 percent from the same point last year, and intermodal volume was up 1 percent.

Total North American carload volume for the first 14 weeks of 2014 was down 0.5 percent compared with the same point in 2013, while intermodal volume was up 4 percent.
