Freight Shipment & Expenditures Down

Freight shipments in January were down 3.6 percent from December 2013, and down 2.0 percent from January of last year according to the Cass Freight Index Report.  Although January is typically the slowest month of the year, the winter weather conditions this January further contributed to the depressed figures.

Freight expenditures in January fell 5.1 percent from December, which can be attributed in large part to the 3.6 percent decline in the number of shipments in January.  However, freight expenditures were up 1.4 percent from January of last year.
