Class I Employment Up

According to the figures released by the Surface Transportation Board Class I railroad employment was up 1.11 percent in April compared to April 2012, and up 0.44 percent from March 2013.

All categories gained year-over-year except Transportation (other than train and engine) which was down 0.26 percent.  The category with the largest gain was Professional and administrative, up 2.66 percent from last year.  Executives, officials, and staff assistants category was up 2.10 percent, Maintenance-of-Way and structures was up 1.04 percent, Maintenance of equipment and stores was up 0.93 percent, and Transportation (train and engine) was up 0.91 percent. Rail’s Safest Year on Record

In their March 11 press release the Association of American Railroads announced that 2012 was the safest year in the rail industry history according to the newest statics released by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).  The previous record was set in 2011.  The train accident rate per million train miles was down 19 percent, the employee casualty rate was down 9 percent, and the grade crossing collision rate was down 8 percent in 2012 compared to 2011.  Read More

Rail Safety Report

According to the Federal Railroad Administration’s (FRA) report, total accidents/incidents in January-November 2012 declined 7.3% to 9,741 compared to the same time period in 2011.  In their ten year overview total accidents/incidents show a decline of 25.7% since 2003 when the total was 13,108.

The FRA reported train accidents fell 16.5% to 1,545 compared to 2011.  Derailments accounted for 1,136, down 14.7% and collisions declined 5.9% to 143.  There were 883 yard accidents, down 3.5%.  Highway/rail grade crossing fatalities dropped 7.6% to 214.  However, the number of trespassing fatalities increased 10.6% to 417.
