The Association of American Railroads reported on Feb 7, 2013 that intermodal traffic in January 2013 was up 5.2 percent compare to January 2013. However, carloads were down 6.3 percent in January 2013 compared to last year at the same time.
According to the AAR carloads were down 3.4 percent, while intermodal volume was up 7.2 percent from last year for the week ending February 2, 2013.
Canadian carloads were down 2.6 percent for the week ending Feb. 2, 2013 compared to the same week in 2012, but were up 1.8 percent from last year for the first five weeks of 2013. Canadian intermodal traffic was also down for the week, 2.9 percent compared to last year. The intermodal volume for the first five weeks in 2013, on the other hand, was up 1.8 percent compared to the same point in 2012.
Mexican railroads reported an increase in both carload and intermodal volume for the week ending Feb. 2, 2013 compared to the same week last year. Carload was up 16.2 percent and intermodal up 1.1 percent. Cumulative volume for the first five weeks of 2013 shows carloads are up 6.9 percent, but that intermodal volume was down 6.9 percent from the same time period in 2012.
Combine, U.S., Canadian and Mexican railroads reported that for the first five weeks of 2013 carloads were down 4.3 percent compared to the same time period in 2012. However, North American intermodal volume was up 5.1 percent compared to last year for the first five weeks.
