June Freight Index

According to the DAT North American Index spot market frieght volumes roase 2.2 percent in June compared to May.  Freight availability fro both vans and flatbeds rose 1.8 percent in June compared to May, however for refrigerated (reefer) trailers in only rose 0.6 percent.

Freight availabiltu declined 9.5 percent compared to the record volumes of June 2012.  Volume dropped for both vans and flatbeds compared to June 2012; down 9.5 percent for vans and 6.8 percent for flatbeds.  However, load availablity for reefers rose 3.9 percent from last year.

In June spot market rates rose 4.5 percnet for vans, 0.6 percent for flatbeds and 0.6 percent for reefers compared to May.  Compared to June 2012 spot market rates in June 2013 declined 2.1 percent for vans and 8.3 percent for flatbeds, while reefer rates increased 0.6 percent.

Freight Shipments Rose 1.2%

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ (BTS) Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI) released July 10, 2013 the amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry rose 1.2 percent in May from April, 2.7 percent higher than May 2012.  The May index level was 20.6 percent above the April 2009 recession, but 0.8 percent below the all time high level in December 2011.

Both U.S. carload and intermodal volume were up for week ending May 18, 2013.  The AAR reported that carload volume was up 1.9 percent and intermodal volume was up 3.5 percent compared to the same week in 2012.  Total U.S. rail traffic for the week was up 2.6 percent compared to the same week last year.

Carload volume for the first 20 weeks of 2013 was down 1.7 percent from the same point last year, while intermodal volume was up 4.3 percent.  For the first 20 weeks of 2013 total U.S. rail traffic was up 1 percent from last year.
