Rail Taffic Up For the Week: Aug. 24

U.S. carload volume for the week ending August 24, 2013 declined 1.7 percent from the same week in 2012, while intermodal volume was up 3.5 percent according to the AAR.  Total U.S. rail traffic for the week was up 0.7 percent from last year.

For the first 34 weeks of 2013 carload volume was down 1.2 percent from the same point in 2012, however intermodal volume was up 3.5 percent.  Total U.S. rail traffic was up 0.9 percent from the same point last year for the fist 34 weeks f 2013.

Canadian carload volume for the week ending August 24th was down 0.8 percent compared with the same week last year, while intermodal volume was up 6.1 percent.  For the first 34 weeks of 2013 Canadian carload volume was up 1.3 percent, and intermodal volume was up 4.1 percent compared to the same week in 2012.

Mexican carload volume for the week was up 6.2 percent compared with the same week last year, however intermodal volume was down 4.0 percent.  Mexican carload volume for the first 34 weeks of 2013 was up 9.1 percent from the same point in 2012, while intermodal volume was down 1.2 percent.

North American, U.S., Canadian and Mexican, carload volume for the first 34 weeks of 2013 was down 0.3 percent from the same point last year, while intermodal volume was up 3.5 percent.

In the Weekly Rail Traffic Summary released August 22, 2013 the AAR reported for the week ending August 17th carload volume was up 0.5 percent compared with the same week last year, and intermodal volume was up 3.7 percent.  Total U.S. rail traffic for the week was up 2 percent compared with the same week in 2012.

The AAR reported that total U.S. rail traffic was mixed in July 2013, but that the weekly average for intermodal traffic in July was the highest of any July in history.  Intermodal traffic for the month of July was up 2.5 percent compared with July 2012, while carload traffic was down 0.5 percent.

Freight Car Building Forecast

According to its quarterly freight car building forecast released July 29, 2013 the Economic Planning Associates, Inc. (EPA) expects this year’s numbers, which are 11 percent behind 2012, to improve significantly in 2014.  EPA’s president Peter Toja stated that based on first half assemblies and mid-year backlogs the EPA expects deliveries of 52,500 railcars in 2013, 10.8 percent below the 2012 level.  Next year they anticipate a rebound to 60,300 deliveries.  Toja predicts that beginning in 2015 and continuing through to the end of year 2018 annual railcar assembly will be relatively consistent, staying in the range of 64,300 to 65,500 cars and intermodal platforms.
