Increase in Rail Traffic

For the week ending July 6, 2013 the AAR reported that both U.S. carload and intermodal volume increased, carload volume was up 2 percent and intermodal volume was up 1.1 percent compared to the same week last year.  Total rail traffic for the week was up 1.6 percent compared with the same week in 2012.

For the first 27 weeks of 2013 U.S. carload volume was down 1.4 percent, however intermodal volume was up 3.6 percent from the same point last year.  Total U.S. rail traffic was up 0.9 percent from last year for the first 27 weeks of 2013.

Canadian railroad volume was up for the week ending July 6th, carload volume was up 7.3 percent and intermodal volume was up 5.1 percent compared to the same week last year.  For the first 27 weeks of 2013 Canadian carload volume was up 1.6 percent, and intermodal volume was up 4.4 percent from the same point in 2012.

Both Mexican carload and intermodal volume was up for the week, carload volume was up 13.7 percent and intermodal volume was up 0.2 percent compared to the same week last year.  For the first 27 weeks of 2013 Mexican carload volume was up 9.6 percent, while intermodal volume was down 0.1 percent from the same point last year.

North American rail volume for the first 27 weeks of 2013 was mixed; carload volume was down 0.3 percent, while intermodal volume was up 3.6 percent compared with the same point in 2012.
