Mixed Weekly Rail Traffic

In the Weekly Rail Traffic Summary released March 14, 2013 the Association of American Railroads reported mixed rail traffic for the week ending March 9.  Carload volume was down 0.9 percent compared to the same week in 2012, while intermodal volume was up 4 percent.  Total U.S. traffic for the week was up 1.3 percent compared with the same week last year. Rail’s Safest Year on Record

In their March 11 press release the Association of American Railroads announced that 2012 was the safest year in the rail industry history according to the newest statics released by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).  The previous record was set in 2011.  The train accident rate per million train miles was down 19 percent, the employee casualty rate was down 9 percent, and the grade crossing collision rate was down 8 percent in 2012 compared to 2011.  Read More

The Association of American Railroads’ rail traffic summary released March 7, 2013 reported that both U.S. carload and intermodal volume were up for the week ending March 2, 2013 compared with the same week last year.  Carload volume was up 0.2 percent, and intermodal volume was up 9.7 percent.  Total U.S. rail traffic was up 4.4 percent for the week compared to the same week in 2012. According to the Association of American Railroads report released Feb. 21, 2013 carload volume was down 1.2 percent for the week ending Feb. 16, 2013 compared to the same point last year.  However, intermodal volume was up 13.6 percent compared to the same week in 2012.  Total U.S. traffic was up 5.3 percent for the week compared to last year.
