North American Freight Numbers for February

According to the report released May 1st by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, trucks transported 59.1 percent of the freight moved in February 2013 between the U.S. and its NAFTA partners, Canada and Mexico, followed by rail at 15.3 percent, vessels at 9.7 percent, pipelines at 7.7 percent and air at 3.6 percent.  Surface transportation modes, truck, rail and pipeline, carries 82.1 percent of the total NAFTA freight flows. The Association of American Railroads reported mixed traffic for the week ending April 20, 2013, with carload volume down 2 percent but intermodal volume up 0.6 percent compared with the same week last year.  Total U.S. rail traffic for the week was down 0.8 percent compared with the same week in 2012.

For week ending April 13, 2013 the AAR reported carload volume was down 0.6 percent compared with the same week last year, while intermodal volume was up 3.3 percent.  Total U.S. rail traffic for the week was up 1.2 percent compared with the same week in 2012.

U.S. carload volume was down 2.4 percent for the first 15 weeks of 2013 compared with the same time period last year, however intermodal volume was up 4.9 percent.  For the first 15 weeks of 2013, total U.S. rail volume was up 0.8 percent from last year.

For week ending April 13, 2013 the AAR reported carload volume was down 0.6 percent compared with the same week last year, while intermodal volume was up 3.3 percent.  Total U.S. rail traffic for the week was up 1.2 percent compared with the same week in 2012.

U.S. carload volume was down 2.4 percent for the first 15 weeks of 2013 compared with the same time period last year, however intermodal volume was up 4.9 percent.  For the first 15 weeks of 2013, total U.S. rail volume was up 0.8 percent from last year.

In the weekly rail traffic summary released April 11, 2013 the AAR reported an increase in U.S. rail traffic from 2012 for the week ending April 6, 2013.  Carload for the week was up 3.7 percent compared with the same week last year, and intermodal volume was up 0.2 percent.  Total U.S. Rail traffic for the week was up 2.1 percent compared to the same week in 2012.

According to the AAR, intermodal traffic was up 0.5 percent in March 2013 compared with March 2012.  This is the smallest year-over-year monthly gain for intermodal since August 2011.  Carload traffic, on the other hand, was down 0.5 percent in March compared to the same month last year.  The decline in March is the lowest year-over-year monthly dip in carloads since January 2012.

For the week ending March 30, 2013 both U.S. carload and intermodal traffic were down.  Carload traffic was down 1.9 percent compared to last year, and intermodal was down 3.8 percent.  Total U.S. rail traffic was down 2.8 percent for the week compared to the same week in 2012. Read More
