The AAR reported that total U.S. rail traffic was mixed in July 2013, but that the weekly average for intermodal traffic in July was the highest of any July in history.  Intermodal traffic for the month of July was up 2.5 percent compared with July 2012, while carload traffic was down 0.5 percent.

May North American Freight Numbers

According to the North American Freight Numbers released by the Bureau of U.S.-NAFTA Freight by Mode, May 2013Transportation Statistics (BTS) of the U.S. Department of Transportation, trucks transported 60.8 percent of U.S.-NAFTA trade in May 2013.  Rail moved 15.1 percent of freight in May followed by vessels at 8.6 percent, pipelines at 6.8 percent and air at 3.9 percent.  Combined surface trade transportation modes (truck, rail and pipelines) carried 82.7 percent of the total NAFTA freight flows.

Decline in Diesel Fuel Price

The Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Update released August 8, 2013 by the EIA reported that the national average diesel fuel price declined one cent from last week to $3.63 per gallon.  The Rocky Mountain region was the only region where the average diesel fuel price increased.  The Rocky Mountain price increased two cents to $3.93 per gallon.  Both the East Coast and Midwest prices declined one cent to $3.92 per gallon on the East Coast and $3.88 per gallon in the Midwest.  The average diesel fuel price on the Gulf Coast and West Coast remained unchanged from last week.  The Gulf Coast price remained at $3.84 per gallon, and the West Coast at $4.05 per gallon.

In the Weekly Rail Traffic report for week ending July 17, 2013 the AAR reported carload volume was up 2.5 percent compared to the same week in 2012, and intermodal volume was up 2.4 percent.  Total U.S. rail traffic for the week was up 2.5 percent from last year.

Carload volume for the first 30 weeks of 2013 was down 1.3 percent from the same point last year, while intermodal volume was up 3.4 percent.  For the first 30 weeks of 2013 total U.S. traffic was up 0.8 percent from the same point in 2012.
