Rail Traffic: Feb. 9, 2013

The weekly rail traffic summary released by the Association of American Railroads on Feb. 14, 2013 reported that total U.S. rail traffic for the week ending Feb. 9 was up 2.2 percent compared to the same week in 2012.  Carload traffic fell 2.3 percent, while intermodal was up 7.7 percent when compared to the same week last year.

According to the AAR, cumulative volume for the first six weeks of 2013 showed that carloads were down 5.7 percent, however intermodal was up 5.7 percent from the same point last year.  Total U.S. traffic for the first six weeks of 2013 was down 0.7 percent from last year. Read More

U.S. freight carload traffic declined 6.4% for the second week of 2013 when compared to the same week in 2012 according to the Association of American Railroads report released January 17, 2012.  U.S. intermodal volume continues to go up, showing a 10.4% increase for the week ending 1/12/13. According to the Association of American Railroads, U.S. freight carload traffic declined 12.1% for the week ending January 5, 2013 compared to the same week last year.  Intermodal was also down from last year, it fell 8%.  As noted by AAR, traffic volume was most likely effected by the New Year’s holiday falling on a Monday and Tuesday in 2013, as opposed to it falling on a Saturday and Sunday in 2012.
